How to Use the Production Editing Toolbar in ArcGIS
The Production Editing Toolbar is a feature of the ArcGIS Production Mapping extension that allows you to edit data in a production environment. The toolbar includes several tools that are part of the Production Mapping extension, as well as some ArcMap editing tools. The toolbar also provides access to the Product Library, which contains rules for displaying and validating attributes and metadata.
In this article, we will show you how to set up the production editing environment, how to use some of the tools on the Production Editing Toolbar, and how to download the ArcGIS Production Mapping extension.
Setting up the production editing environment
To set up the production editing environment, you need to define the product library and the production database. The product library is a geodatabase that contains data models, specifications, templates, and other resources for creating and editing products. The production database is the editing workspace where you store your data and apply the rules from the product library.
To choose a product library and a production database, follow these steps:
Start ArcMap and open a map document that contains your data.
On the main menu, click Customize > Production > Toolbar Settings > Editing. If the ArcMap Setting Change Warning appears, click OK.
Click the Product Library button on the Production Editing Toolbar to open the Product Library window.
Right-click Product Library and click Select Product Library. Navigate to the location of your product library geodatabase and click Open.
Right-click Production Data and click Select Production Database. Navigate to the location of your production database geodatabase and click Open.
You should see a tree view of the product library and the production database in the Product Library window. The data model that matches your data will appear in bold under the Data Models level. This indicates that any rules configured in the product library for that data model will be used when editing data with Production Mapping.
Using some of the tools on the Production Editing Toolbar
The Production Editing Toolbar contains several tools that can help you edit your data more efficiently and accurately. Here are some examples of how to use some of these tools:
The Cut Polygons tool allows you to split a polygon into two or more polygons by drawing a line across it. You can also use this tool to create holes or islands inside polygons.
The Edit Vertices tool allows you to modify the shape of a feature by adding, deleting, or moving vertices and segments. You can also use this tool to snap vertices to other features or coordinates.
The Merge tool allows you to combine two or more features of the same layer into one feature. You can also use this tool to merge attributes from multiple features into one feature.
The Reshape Feature tool allows you to change the shape of a line or polygon feature by drawing a new line or polygon over it. You can also use this tool to extend or trim a line feature.
The Rotate tool allows you to rotate a feature around a specified point by dragging it with your mouse. You can also use this tool to rotate a feature by entering an angle value.
The Sketch Properties tool allows you to view and edit the properties of a sketch, such as length, area, angle, direction, coordinates, etc. You can also use this tool to enter values for creating precise sketches.
The Trace tool allows you to create segments by following along existing features or boundaries. You can also use this tool to trace along multiple features or boundaries at once.
